About the images

On 27 September 2022, the Natural History Museum Vienna hosted the first repatriation to Aotearoa New Zealand and the largest repatriation from Austria which saw a group of Māori and Moriori ancestors representing the remains of approximately 64 individuals. Records indicated that 49 of these ancestors were collected by Austrian taxidermist and notorious grave-robber Andreas Reischek who spent twelve years in New Zealand from 1877 to 1889.
